PAINT GOES A LONG WAY
Breathe life into new furniture by giving it a fresh paint job! Take your plain white Ikea furniture and give it some color. Choose a new color scheme for your room and repaint your furniture accordingly. Head down to your local Lowe’s or Home Depot and pick some paint swatches to test out before settling on a color or two for your furniture. Another great way to spruce up your furniture if painting seems too difficult is adding sheets of wallpaper! Sand down the piece of furniture and then measure out the sheets of wallpaper needed before pressing it down. You can even go a step further and paint the handles or other edges and trims of the furniture.
REARRANGE EVERYTHING
After breathing some new life into your furniture, another great way to spice up your old room is to simply move things around! Moving all of your furniture into new corners will open up your room in new ways. The first step in doing this is to sketch out a floor plan so you don’t exhaust yourself by moving around furniture every five minutes before finally settling on a floor plan. After coming up with a solid sketch, start moving the bigger pieces of furniture such as your bed or desk into different areas and see how you feel sitting at your desk or sleeping in your bed. Then slowly start rearranging your smaller pieces around until the room finally comes together!
THRIFTING DECOR
Another simple and inexpensive way to add some originality to your room is to go thrifting and hunt for pieces to add! Once you’ve decided on a theme and rearranged your current furniture and decorations, you’ll have a pretty good idea of how much additional wall space you have to hang stuff up, or how much floor space you have to add floor decor. Before heading down to your local thrift store, make a list of decorations that you want to add to your room. Once you’re there, browse the shelves for pieces that match the vibe and colors you’re looking for. After purchasing your treasures, be sure to clean them thoroughly.
OPTIMIZE LIGHTING
Another great thing that many people forget to utilize in their rooms is the lighting! During the day, optimizing natural lighting is the way to go, but once the sun sets, it’s important to find the best forms of lighting. Change the main overhead light from bright white LED lighting to a softer, warmer light. Add other desk or standing lamps all around your room to maximize the soft lighting. Consider adding fairy lights or Christmas lights to make the room feel the coziest and warmest it can be! Most people think the trick to creating a brand new room or redecorating the room is to go out and buy all new furniture, but consider adding other changes to your room like decor and lighting to give your room a brand new feel!
