In today’s fast-paced world, finding moments of peace, stillness, and reflection can feel impossible. Yet amidst the dullness or chaos of everyday life, there does exist a simple and accessible tool with benefits for mental well-being: journaling. Whether it is jotting ideas down on paper or typing them in your laptop or phone, this method of mental de-stressing can be incredibly therapeutic.

SELF EXPRESSION

At its core, journaling is a form of self-expression which provides you with a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings without a fear of judgment or criticism from other people. By giving your thoughts a voice, you can gain clarity and insight into why you feel the way you feel and why you react the way you react. Journaling not only promotes self-discovery but enhances creativity, too. You can sketch doodles in the margin of your notebook or weave together an essay about your thoughts and feelings. All of these allow you to explore new ideas and tap into your hidden talents and inner creativity.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Studies have also shown that journaling is a great tool to manage stress and regulate your emotions. Writing about a stressful event or a bad day can help to release your pent-up tensions and anxiety. Similarly, the act of journaling also lets you step back from the situation and see everything from an objective perspective. This allows you to approach difficult situations with greater clarity and a level of calmness. Journaling is also a great tool to help you problem-solve and set goals. You can document your thoughts and feelings during different times and periods of your life, which lets you recognize areas for growth and improvement over time. You can even track progress for these goals and your achievements over time, too!

HOW TO GET STARTED

If you’re new to journaling, getting started can feel a bit intimidating. Below are three tips and tricks to help you begin your journaling journey:

  1. Set aside special time: This means to carve out a few minutes or an hour every day to sit down with your journal and write whatever is in your mind. Whether it be in the morning right when you wake up or at night before you go to sleep, find a time that works for you to incorporate journaling into your regular routine.
  2. Keep it simple and be honest: Your journal, especially when you start, is a completely empty canvas. It might seem pressuring to fill it up perfectly without making mistakes, but mistakes happen! Your journal is your own private space, so just be honest and allow yourself to explore all aspects of self-exploration, including making a mess.

Experimentation: Try out different journaling methods and styles. Whether you prefer free-form writing, bullet journaling, doodling, or anything else, find a format that works for you. And don’t be afraid to switch it up!
