It’s no secret that social media has become obsessed with graceful aging and maintaining a youthful appearance well into your middle ages and beyond. We should remember that aging is an inevitable part of life. However, there are many lifestyle factors that are crucial to aging gracefully, so you are able to live a long and healthy life and continue to be able to move and be active in the future!
MENTAL STIMULATION
Just as important as physical activity to keep the body moving, it is key to stimulate the mind, too. Physical exercise keeps the mind strong, whereas mental exercises keep your brain sharp. Engaging in mentally stimulating activities, like reading, puzzles, learning new languages or skills, playing new instruments, etc. helps to strengthen neural connections and may help to delay cognitive decline. Try learning a new hobby, speaking a new language, or enrolling in an online course! Lifelong learning is also associated with better mental health, as challenging your brain will help to maintain regular cognitive function and overall mental agility.
SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
Maintaining strong social ties is also crucial for both mental and physical health. Studies have shown that people with vibrant social networks tend to live longer, healthier lives. Social engagement helps to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are directly related to feelings of depression, cognitive decline, and even heart disease. Be sure to cultivate relationships with your family and friends and other members of your community. Participating in community activities, volunteering nearby, or being a member of different social clubs help to foster a sense of purpose and belonging. These meaningful connections and emotional support will help to foster resilience in the face of life’s challenges, which contribute to greater longevity.
STRESS MANAGEMENT
Chronic and never-ending stress accelerates aging both physically and mentally. High levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) leads to weight gain, high blood pressure, and an overall weakened immune system. Additionally, stress is also linked to the premature aging of cells, which further contributes to the development of diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Though it’s easier said than done, it is important to find ways to manage and reduce stress for the sake of your health. Mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation will help to reduce cortisol levels and promote a sense of calmness. Also, regularly engaging in hobbies you find relaxing as well as spending time with friends and family will help to manage your stress and improve your emotional well-being.
LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE
Drinking alcohol in moderation has many health benefits, especially for the heart. It is key to remember that alcohol must be had in moderation, because excessive drinking is detrimental to health and will lead to poor aging. The general guideline is up to 1 drink a day for women and 2 drinks a day for men. Going beyond that can lead to many health risks, like liver disease, increased cancer risk (like of the liver, breast, or colon), heart disease and chance of stroke, as well as overall cognitive decline which can lead to memory issues, dementia, and other neurological problems. Maintaining a balance is essential. Though it might be best to completely eliminate alcohol, that is not always possible. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation, and consider healthier alternatives like mocktails in social settings to contribute to healthier aging!
