Tis the season for long, cozy nights with friends and family, including great stories, festive music, and delicious food! But remember, hosting a dinner party should be fun and exciting, not stressful. A little bit of planning leading up to the big night will go a long way. Below are a few tips to help you host a festive, relaxed gathering that everyone will love!
PLAN AHEAD OF TIME
Plan the menu ahead of time so you are able to design a menu that is both impressive and manageable. Pick dishes that can be prepared in advance or dishes that require minimal prep on the day of the party. Consider recipes that don’t need precise timing or exact measurements like casseroles, braised foods, or even buffet-style options that allow your guests to pick from many options. Consider setting up a self-serve drink station so no one has to be at the drink table all night mixing drinks for everyone. Add a holiday punch, wine, sparkling water, and juices to provide your guests with festive choices for drinks. Place glasses, ice, garnishes, and napkins nearby to allow guests to help themselves.
SIMPLE DECOR AND AMBIANCE
Be sure to keep the decor simple and elegant, which helps you avoid going overboard and having to purchase dozens of new decor pieces. A beautiful table does not need to be extravagant and covered in flowers. A centerpiece of candles, fresh greenery, and/or seasonal plants adds warmth without taking up too much space. Opt for a cohesive color palette that makes it easy to find different pieces, but will also keep the decor looking polished with minimal effort. As for the ambiance of the party, dim the lights slightly and add candles to create a cozy atmosphere. This will add to your already present decor and elevate your home to the next level!
OFFER MANY OPTIONS
The key to a stress-free event is preparation. The day before, prepare all of the ingredients, set the table, arrange decorations, and clean up the common areas. Be sure to include your guests’ dietary preferences in your planning. Include options for various needs (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) to ensure that everyone feels welcome and has something to enjoy. Even just one or two dishes that you can change or adapt based on people’s dietary needs can go a long way. Now you’ll only have to do a few last minute tasks on the day of the event!
DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
Things might not always go perfectly at your dinner party, and that’s okay! The day won’t always go as planned, but the goal is to spend time with your family and friends and enjoy a great meal together – not to stress out about every small mistake. If something doesn’t go as planned, just laugh it off! Pour yourself a drink, take a breath, and keep the focus on enjoying the night.
