It’s been just over a week since Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare has hit the shelves and also been flying off of them at record numbers. It became the fastest-selling, non-fiction book in the UK since records had begun to be kept in 1998 by Nielsen BookData. The only two books that have surpassed the prince’s memoir are the Harry Potter series and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol.
BOOK LEAK
Much of the scandalous details in the book were leaked and read by supporters and nay-sayers alike leading up to the weeks of the book’s release. Shockingly, this did not hurt the sales of the memoir in any way, shape, or form. The memoir provides an in-depth description of his life in the royal family, as well as what life was like after stepping back. He also talks about his reaction to his mother’s death, conflicts with his father and brother, and many more quite personal details. The book was leaked in Spain, so much of it was translated into English by those eager to read more about his life. Not as surprising, however, was that this leak was a well-thought-out PR strategy to further promote his memoir. It was then later sold in small batches by some Spanish booksellers. Lucky for Prince Harry and the publishers of Spare, there was no harm done when the time of the book’s release came.
HIS NEW IMAGE
Though he spent much of his time in the royal family as the younger troublemaking, rebellious brother, he has worked hard to rebrand that image since his marriage to Meghan Markle and since stepping back from royal duties. Not long after their exit from the royal family and the UK (commonly titled Megxit), the two were painted as foolish and selfish, and people wondered how they could walk away from their family. About a year or so after Megxit, the couple did a sit-down interview with Oprah where they shocked the world after telling her viewers what truly happened as Meghan Markle joined the family and the harsh realities she and Prince Harry were forced to face. Since the interview, many have vehemently denied the claims they have made against the royal family, while others proudly stand by them. Regardless, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have continued to come out with shocking new revelations of the horrors of being a part of the royal family in Netflix documentaries and TV interviews.
THE TRUTHS THAT CAME OUT
As mentioned before, his memoir revealed some salacious truths about the royal family and helped the public to learn more about the family and their dynamics. He portrayed his family, better known as the Windsors or the British Royal Family, as a cold-hearted family, doing most of their hugging and kissing in public to assure the British public that they are a loving family who cares about each other and their subjects. Prince Harry’s memoir paints quite the opposite picture. He talks about his stepmother Camilla (his father’s affair partner while he was married to the beloved Princess Diana) in a rather negative tone, making the reader understand that much of her antics come close to that of a Cinderella stepmother. He also discussed the breakdown of the relationship with his brother as Meghan Markle came into the picture and Prince Harry hoped that with his brother’s help, the British public would stop raining hellfire down on his new wife. He even discussed the feelings he faced surrounding his mother’s death in 1997, where he strongly believed that his mother never actually passed, but was simply in hiding to get away from the same horrors of the royal family he discusses in his memoir.
THE FINAL VERDICT
Now, this part is for you to decide. You can buy the memoir yourself and read it or simply scroll through social media to find excerpts from his memoir with many, many different opinions on them. At the end of his memoir, Prince Harry discusses how finally moving to California has given him the peace he so desired and given him the strength to raise his two children. You might gain a newfound sense of sympathy for him and his immediate family, and a likely distastefulness for the other senior royals left in England. Regardless of whether you are a loyal fan of the royal family or simply follow along because you find their spectacles to be captivating and entertaining, Spare is a great read for all audiences, which you can find right here.
