Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”), is a term originating from Danish culture that many people have adopted. Embracing hygge is all about creating a cozy and comforting atmosphere that promotes a strong sense of well-being, relaxation, and connection with nature, oneself, and to others. This has recently become a global trend, so below are three easy ways to introduce hygge into your life this month.

QUALITY TIME

A large part of hygge is about shared moments with friends and family. A great way to do this is to plan cozy gatherings with your loved ones such as game nights, movie marathons, or even just a simple lunch or dinner with them. The main focus here is on building connections while also enjoying each others’ company. Another major aspect of hygge is simply quality time with yourself. Spend time in nature to embrace the simplicity of it and the tranquility it offers. Go for walks by yourself in your neighborhood with no headphones to soak in all the sights and sounds around you. Sit in your garden and journal. Try to meditate or do some slow exercises- anything to enjoy some quality time with yourself. Do what you love and connect with nature, as that is a huge aspect of hygge.

CREATE A COZY SPACE

Another great way to embrace the practices of hygge is to make your living space warm, inviting, and cozy. Use loads of soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and duller/warmer lighting to create a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. Lighting plays a crucial role in hygge. Using soft, warm lights like candles, fairy lights, or warm-toned lamps creates a soft and inviting ambiance. Consider adding candles around your room or turn on the fireplace for more warmth. Try to unplug from your electronic devices and take some time to relax. You could read a book, listen to calming music, or simply just close your eyes and enjoy the silence. As silly as it sounds, embracing hygge involves being present in the moment and savoring the simple pleasures of life. Hygge is also closely associated with comforting foods and drinks, so enjoying a warm beverage and hot, homemade meals are the best way to evoke that sense of warmth and satisfaction that we search so deeply for in hygge lifestyles.

MINDFUL PRACTICES

Engage in mindful activities such as yoga or meditation to promote relaxation and self-awareness. These are practices that can help you stay in the moment. Hygge is about finding joy in simple, everyday moments, so go outside as the sun rises or sets, smell fresh baked bread or brownies, and enjoy the warmth and coziness of a soft blanket. Try to form a strong sense of gratitude for these pleasures in your life, regardless of how small they might be. Be mindful of the things you do and say. A great way to do this is to journal, and consider writing daily in a journal and saying something positive about your day. Whether it be a friend you got to meet, a place you got to see, or simply the fact that you got the sleep in, every day has its bright sides, so consider writing them down to reminisce on them when times get tougher.
