Meditation is an ancient practice that has been used for many thousand years to help people promote inner peace and overall mental, emotional, and physical well-being. The overall focus of it is to fixate your mind on a certain idea to achieve a feeling of relaxation. Meditation has been extremely popular in the Western world, as more and more people recognize the benefits of meditation and share what they know with others.
WHAT IS MEDITATION
Meditation is an ancient practice that originated in India many thousand years ago. It has roots in ancient Eastern and South Asian traditions like in the Hindu and Buddhist religions. The earliest written records of meditation date back to 1500 BCE which were found in the Vedas, also known as the sacred texts of Hinduism. The popularity of meditation expanded into the west dung the mid to late 20th century, which happened mostly during the popularity of spiritual practices such as yoga and Zen Buddhism. Meditation became even more mainstream in the 1960s and 1970s as part of a larger cultural movement in the west toward spiritual exploration and inner self-discovery. Today, meditation is a very widespread practice that is recognized by many as a powerful tool for improving mental and physical health and has even been shown to reduce stress. It can be practiced at home, in a yoga studio with an instructor, and sometimes even in some corporate environments where managers place significant emphasis on stress-free work days.
WHY IS IT HELPFUL?
One of the biggest benefits of meditation is stress reduction. Modern life, with work, school, and dealing with many relationships and responsibilities, can often take a toll on people, even those that seem to be as happy as possible. Meditation has been proven to reduce the stress hormone, also known as cortisol. Lowering levels of cortisol has been shown to have a positive impact on the overall well-being of a human being. Regular meditation will help to keep these levels regulated and relatively low. Meditation is also great to reduce symptoms or feelings of depression and anxiety. It allows us to regulate emotions maturely and helps us to manage our thoughts positively. Meditation is not just helpful for mental and emotional help, though, but also great for physical health, as well! Regular meditation can help to improve immune functions, reduce overall inflammation in the body, and even lower blood pressure. Constant meditation will even improve overall sleep and helps you to sleep more soundly and feel more well-rested over time, which improves other functions like concentration and focus.
HOW DO YOU START?
So how do you go about starting a regular routine of incorporating meditation into your daily routine? The first step is to set a time and place and establish a daily spot to practice it. Find a quiet and comfortable spot where you can sit without any distractions or just a few minutes every day. Also consider doing it at a specific time every single day, such as first thing in the morning or right before bed. It’s also important to start small. You can never jump into any new tasks or habits head-on, so start by setting realistic goals and doing simple meditation exercises before doing anything too complicated. Once you become more comfortable, increase the time or amount of exercises you do to see the positive impacts of meditation! It’s also very important to focus on your breathing and also be patient and kind to yourself. Do not get discouraged if you happen to forget a day of practicing meditation or if it seems like a struggle at first.
So, even though the practice of meditation itself has completely changed and adapted over time since its founding in BCE ancient India, its core principles are still the same. By actively choosing to focus the mind on a positive and peaceful thought, you can cultivate inner peace and help yourself to grow mentally and emotionally, and help yourself to navigate the challenges of modern life with ancient practices!
