As the semester comes to a close and winter holidays and week-long breaks edge closer and closer, some students have come to dread the idea of spending a full 2-3 weeks stuck at home. If you’re lucky, you get to travel or hang out with friends, but most times you end up eagerly waiting for school to start again to keep yourself busy – not the way to go! Instead, learn to make the most of your time while you get hours of time to yourself to do anything you want. Below are a few ideas of things to do to keep yourself busy that don’t require dozens of dollars to spend or millions of miles to travel.
Travel Locally
When you’re home for a long break, the idea of spending the entire month trapped inside your house sounds horrendous, so get out! Do something exciting, and travel to a new place! You don’t have to buy a plane ticket and fly across the country to have something to do. Find spots in your city or state that you can travel to. Since you’re traveling locally, you don’t even need to stress about the extra costs that come with buying a hotel room or additional transportation. If you live in Georgia, you could take a day or two out of your month-long breaks to visit all sorts of local travel spots. Drive to the heart of Atlanta and visit the World of Coca-Cola, Zoo Atlanta, CNN Center, or the College Football Hall of Fame. You can even choose to go a little further like visiting Helen or Savannah!
Start a Journal
Another great way to spend time over your break is to start journaling. Journaling is a great way to write out your feelings and thoughts. It can also be just a great way to write down what you do each day to go back and recount your winter vacation. All this requires is a journal of any kind and any sorts of pens, stickers, or other stationary items! You can choose to do prompts you find online, like the ones found here. You can also write detailed lists of what you do during the day. There are no rules or limitations when it comes to journaling, write down whatever you desire!
Learn a New Skill
A month-long break is also a great time to learn a new skill or learn how to do something you’ve been hoping to do for a while. You can learn to cook new things, because what better time than the peak of winter to cook warm, delicious treats to snack on. You can learn to make jewelry with beads and string and learn all new sorts of designs and patterns. You can learn a new language or brush up on whatever languages you already know! You can even try to form new habits like working out every day or waking up in the mornings to meditate and do yoga. Here’s a list of a few more things you can learn to do over your break!
Go Shopping
Another thing you don’t wanna miss is winter sales throughout all of your favorite stores! Whether you choose to shop online or go in person to all the malls in your area, shopping is a great way to spend your time over break. There will be dozens of deals for Christmas sales and winter promos! The best part is you can start shopping for the warmer seasons right now! Most stores start pricing their older, warmer clothing at lower prices as they start pricing up winter clothes. Save your money, wait for the sale, and spend your break shopping!
Give Your Room a Makeover
Another great idea is to give your room a makeover! Spend your break planning and buying up on whatever new decorations and items you want in your room. Consider what sort of a new color palette you want, and what sorts of designs you want featured in your room! Start saving up and splurging on the new decorations you want. Find a guide and tips for redoing and redecorating your room here, and redecorate to your heart’s content!
Enjoy your time during winter break, and allow yourself to relax before the semester starts up again.
