REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION

There are many ways to reduce your energy consumption to make Mother Nature a little happier and avoid racking up costly energy bills. You can switch to energy-efficient lighting in your homes or workplaces. Replace regular light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, which use up to 75-80% less energy and even last up to 25 times longer than regular ones. Another tip is to turn off lights and unplug appliances when they’re not in use. This seems like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget when you’re in a rush, so create a habit of doing so whenever you can! Another tip is to keep an eye on your thermostat, as a lot of energy comes from that. You probably can notice your electricity bill fluctuating as the weather does, too. During the colder months, lower your thermostat just by a few degrees to save some energy and some money! In the warmer months, try a programmable thermostat that can adjust the temperature of your home while you’re not even there. Lastly, it’s very important to use the natural light around you! Use natural light to brighten up your home, which saves electricity, and also creates a more comfortable environment.

REDUCE YOUR MEAT INTAKE

The easiest way to reduce your meat intake, which will have a positive impact on the environment, is to start off with one day of the week when you consciously choose not to eat meat. Try Meatless Mondays if you’re not sure which day to pick! And don’t think this means you’re forced to eat salads and lettuce all day. Search online for new vegetarian recipes and try a new one each week. Another tip is to try to incorporate more plant-based proteins. Rather than relying on meats like chicken or beef to provide you with protein, but rather other protein sources like tofu, beans, lentils, etc. These can be used in your new vegetarian recipes! Also, consider reducing your portion sizes when you consume meat. Rather than cutting out meat from your diet entirely, try to consume less of it when you do, so you can enjoy meat without wasting it or contributing to hurting the environment. You can even opt for meat alternatives and try new ones every time you head to the grocery store. Try things like plant-based burgers or chicken substitutes, which provide similar taste and textures to regular meat while being sustainable.

USE ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION

Another great and easy way to help the environment is to use eco-friendly transportation. Emission fumes from cars, buses, and trucks have contributed significantly to global warming and climate change, while also causing air pollution. An easy way to help out is to walk or bike when you can. If you only have to travel a short distance, then try to opt for one of these options, which are not only great exercise but are also emission-free options! If you need a car to go somewhere further, try to carpool with family or friends to reduce the number of drivers out on the road driving the cars they don’t necessarily need. If your means allow you to do so, you can even invest in an electric or hybrid vehicle, which emits fewer emissions and end up being more cost-efficient in the long run, as you save lots of money on gas. It’s also important to properly maintain your vehicle which can help fuel efficiency while also reducing emissions.

REDUCE YOUR WASTE

Lastly, reducing waste is another big step toward creating a more sustainable future for our planet. Use reusable bags made of cloth or other fabrics rather than plastic bags when going to the grocery store. This avoids the plastic that takes ages to break down from ending up in our landfills. Another great way to avoid the use of unnecessary plastic is to use reusable water bottles or tupperware rather than plastic bottles and ziplock bags. Also, try to reduce your food waste by planning your meals in advance and by only buying the foods you need. Freeze what you aren’t eating immediately for later use and compost whatever food waste and scraps you have. Try to use cloth napkins or paper straws rather than paper napkins and plastic straws, which in the long run save money and are reusable. Lastly, recycle, recycle, recycle! This is one of the most effective and easiest ways to reduce your waste output. Just be sure to follow local recycling guidelines which you can find online.
