The Firefly Trail is a rail-trail project connecting Athens to Northeast Georgia communities, with new additions coming in 2025. From new segments of the trail under construction, community events, and links to larger trail networks, this once-abandoned rail line is turning into a popular path for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers in Athens and the surrounding areas. Here is a closer look at what is new and what is coming soon for the Firefly Trail.
Final Segment Under Construction: Athens to Winterville

Construction has begun on the final Athens-Clarke County segment of the Firefly Trail. This segment stretches from Hancock Road to downtown Winterville. This portion of the trail follows an historic railbed and closes a 3-mile gap between Athens and Winterville. Anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025, it will provide a continuous, off-road trail from downtown Athens to Winterville, running through Dudley Park. This addition will enhance connectivity for commuters and recreational users.
Trail Creek “Murmur” Trestle Bridge

The Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek, known as the “Murmur Trestle” because of its appearance on R.E.M.’s album cover, was completed and opened to the public in April of 2023. This 500-foot pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Dudley Park is a connection for key sections of the trail, while also serving as a landmark along the route.
Expanded Events: Firefly Trail Race Series

The Firefly Trail Race Series will be growing in 2025 by adding two races at Dudley Park. The aim of these events is to promote trail use and community engagement, while offering opportunities for runners and bikers to experience the trail in a festive atmosphere.
Looking Ahead: Connection to the Georgia Hi-Lo Trail

The Firefly Trail is set to become a key link in the coming soon Georgia Hi-Lo Trail, which will serve as an over 200 mile paved cycling connection between Athens and Savannah. This project will create the longest paved trail and arboretum in the United States and enhance the region’s appeal for outdoor enthusiasts.
