Easter Eggs and References You Might Have Missed in “Stranger Things 4”

Easter Eggs and References You Might Have Missed in “Stranger Things 4”

Fans of “Stranger Things” (like me) were eagerly awaiting the new season that was released within the past month.

With “Stranger Things 3” being released in 2019, the pandemic put a halt on all filming which created even more anticipation for this new season.

And the wait was worth it.

According to NME, this fourth season set the record for most hours watched within the first 28 days of a show being released.

In fact, “Stranger Things 4” actually broke the previous record in only 17 days.

As of July 1, over 7 billion minutes of stranger things were watched by viewers according to Forbes.

This new season consisted of two releases, with seven episodes being dropped on May 27th and the remaining two on July 1.

If you watched this season, you are aware of how long the episodes were.

With that being said, the longer the length of the episodes means more easter eggs and movie references there are to find!

Haven’t seen “Stranger Things 4” yet? This article contains many spoilers but you can check out a previous article I wrote on easter eggs and references from the past three seasons here

Here are 7 Easter Eggs and References You Might Have Missed in “Stranger Things 4”

1. Pennhurst Mental Hospital

For those that are Georgia residents, you might recognize Pennhurst Mental Hospital because these scenes were filmed at Berry College!

According to the Berry College website, the asylum in the show is actually the Ford Buildings which is the school’s office of tourism.

Pennhurst Mental Hospital was inspired by iconic films, including “Silence of the Lambs,” “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest” and “Shutter Island.”

Although the asylum in the show is not real, Pennhurst Mental Hospital was inspired by the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic

The institution shut down in 1987 and is now a tourist attraction!

2. “Aliens” Movie Reference

When watching the scene where Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Murray (Brett Gelman) are searching the Russian prison, you might notice something familiar.

This scene was inspired by the aliens floating in tubes in “Alien: Resurrection” in which Ryder played one of the main characters in.

The reference does not conclude there!

When the army invades the Nina Project, a soldier says, “Quarter and search by twos. Hicks, take the upper level.”

Meanwhile, there was a scene in “Aliens” where a soldier states something similar and instructs someone named Hicks to also take the upper level.

Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) also starred in “Aliens” as Carter Burke.

In “Aliens” he referred to Ripley as ‘kiddo’ often which he also does for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) in “Stranger Things 4.”

These references seem too on the nose to be a coincidence in my opinion, especially with Ryder being involved in both, but there is a chance it may not have been intentional.

3. Michael Meyers References and Season 2 Callback

In season two, Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) wore a Michael Meyers mask for Halloween.

This mask made another appearance this season when Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) asked Max for a disguise.

On top of this, there was a gravestone in the Upside Down with “Meyers” written on it!

4. “Star Wars” Refeerences

If you are a hardcore “Star Wars” fan, you probably noticed various nods to the movie franchise while watching “Stranger Things 4.”

Not only are there quotes pulled from the various “Star Wars” films but there are also many similar plot lines.

When Joyce and Hopper decide to return to the Russian prison you might have caught Murray saying, “I don’t know, Jim. I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

Every “Star Wars” movie has found a way to use that iconic line, sometimes more than once!

Han Solo’s other iconic line was also stated by Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) when he says, “Never tell me the odds.”

Shifting to the plot, you probably noticed that there are many correlations between the stories!

Eleven decides to leave Dr. Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) teachings early to go help her friends even though he advises her not to.

She decided that saving her friends was worth the risk which reflects Solo leaving Yoda’s teachings prematurely.

Additionally, the villain seemingly triumphs at the end of “Stranger Things 4” which also happened in “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.”

5. “Conan the Barbarian” References

Released in 1982, “Conan the Barbarian” is an iconic action and fantasy movie that has two distinct references in this season.

First, if you paid attention to Mike Wheeler’s (Finn Wolfhard) bedroom wall, you can spot a poster for the movie hanging up.

Second, Hopper picked up a sword to fight the Demogorgon in the Russian fighting pit while the epic “Running Up That Hill” and “Stranger Things” theme song remix played.

Little did you know that the sword he uses is the same one used in “Conan the Barbarian.”

Harbour even said in an interview that the sword was extremely heavy!

6. Eddy’s Tattoos

Though many guessed Eddy’s fate, anyone who paid attention to his tattoos could have figured out what would happen to him during episode one of the fourth season!

He has a puppet master pulling strings which are foreshadowing his unforgettable “Master of Puppets” Metallica performance.

Unfortunately, he also had a tattoo of bats which foreshadows his heroic death in the last episode.

7. The Rainbow Room

During Eleven and One’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) big showdown, you might notice a small detail on the wall behind them.

The stripes in the rainbow on the wall are right-side up behind Eleven while the rainbow behind One is upside down.

This shows the fate of One since he is sent to the Upside Down at the end of this fight.
