SUNSCREEN MATTERS!
Sunscreen is crucial for the summer time (and throughout the year) to act as a barrier that helps shield the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. These rays can cause multitudes of damage to the skin, which leads to sunburns, premature aging, and the scariest of all, an increased risk of skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen also reduces the penetration of these rays into your skin, preventing any scabbing or sun damage that can occur to your skin. When choosing a proper sunscreen for the summer, be sure to choose one with a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 30 or higher. Be sure to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of the skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every few hours. Remember to protect your lips with a lip balm containing SPF, as well.
LIGHTWEIGHT MAKEUP
Lightweight makeup is the ideal makeup for the summer to provide the utmost comfort and longevity for your daily makeup look. During the summer time, higher temperatures and humidity can make heavy makeup feel very suffocating and uncomfortable on the skin. Lightweight makeup allows your skin to breathe and prevents clogged pores. Not to mention, summer is a season that’s associated with a much more relaxed and natural aesthetic. There’s no need to step outside in the hot sun every day in full glam. Lightweight makeup products like tinted moisturizers, BB creams, and sheer foundations with SPF in it provide the most effortless and fresh-faced looks for the summer. Lightweight makeup also reduces the risk of breakouts and takes much less time in the mornings to apply. Consider using lightweight concealers, minimal mascara, brown instead of black eyeliner, light powders, and natural lip glosses to create the ideal makeup look!
PROTECT AND HYDRATE YOUR HAIR
During the summertime, exposing your hair to various elements like humidity, chlorine, salt in ocean water, and other vicious natural elements can lead to damage, dryness, and frizz to your hair. Just like your skin, it’s important to shield your hair from the sun. Use UV protection hair products, such as leave-in conditioners, sprays, or serums that contain filters that block UV light. These products will help shield you from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays. Be sure to minimize the amount of heat you use in the hair, too. Too much heat damage will lead to more breakage and frizz. If you do expose your hair to heat, then invest in a good heat protectant. Deep condition your hair regularly to moisturize it and keep it from feeling dead. You can even use treatments like this while you’re swimming in the pool or ocean to protect your hair from chlorine, saltwater, and other damaging elements. Before entering the water, wet your clean hair with a leave-in treatment or even oil to protect it.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR HANDS & FEET
It’s important to take care and hydrate your skin during the summer, but some of the most overlooked areas might be your hands and feet. Keep your hands hydrated by applying a moisturizing and hydrating hand cream regularly. The summer heat and sun exposure will lead to dryness and roughness on your hands. Moisturizing them will prevent any cracking and keep them soft and smooth. Be sure to apply sunscreen to not just your face, arms, and legs, but also your hands and feet if you’re wearing sandals! Trim and care for your nails regularly, and moisturize your fingers and cuticles with cuticle oil often. Avoid using harsh nail products and limit the amount of acetone based nail products to protect your nail beds. Exfoliate the sides and bottoms of your feet to keep them smooth. Be cautious if you are barefoot on hot surfaces or rough terrain.
