How to Handle Freezing Temperatures in the South

As someone who has grown up in the South her whole life, it’s hard every winter when those freak temperatures come and we have to deal with icy roads, freezing temperatures, and frozen cars and conditions. This is not the norm for people who have lived here their whole lives, and adjusting to a week or two of constant below freezing temperatures is a bit of a struggle. Below are a few adjustments you can make to handle the freezing temperature like a pro.

DRESS IN LAYERS

Dressing in layers is key to being able to trap heat close to your body and keep you warm. Even when you’re inside, dressing in layers of multiple comfy pajamas and warm shirts/sweaters is a great way to stay warm. Invest in good quality thermal underwear and sweaters to keep all parts of your body warm. Consider purchasing some thick and fuzzy socks as well to ensure heat doesn’t escape through your feet. Use a warm and waterproof outer layer to ensure that any cold precipitation just slides right off. Be sure to also wear regular winter wear, such as a warm hat, gloves, and scarves to cover other parts of your body. Moisture from snow or icy rain can make you feel even colder, so invest in some warm and moisture-wicking materials. If temperatures are extremely low, and it is possible, simply stay home!

STAY INFORMED AND READY

Be sure that you and your household are ready and prepared for any freezing temperatures. Though it is not an often occurrence, it is dangerous to not be adequately prepared for this type of weather, regardless of where in the US you live. Ensure your home is properly insulated and invest in space heaters to keep you warm. Follow safety guidelines when using heaters, however, to avoid accidents. Read all manufacturer instructions and use an appropriate size heater for the size of your room. Supervise kids and pets around the heater and unplug it when not in use. If you need to drive, fully stock your car with blankets, extra clothing, non-perishable food, an ice scraper, etc. Consider also leaving your kitchen and bathroom sinks lightly dripping water every night before sleeping so your pipes are not frozen the next morning. Check the weather channel or any other reputable news source for updates regarding severe conditions.

HOT FOODS AND BEVERAGES

Drink plenty of warm beverages and eat warm foods to raise your internal body temperature. Drink things like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to keep yourself warm. Avoid drinks like cold milk as it will affect your throat and have the reverse effect. Consider drinking herbal teas, as they are soothing and will also help if you have any current illnesses or throat issues. Be sure to also consume warm meals like warm and freshly cooked pastas, soups, and stews, which are filling and comforting to have in this cold weather.

STAY ACTIVE

Though staying active sounds like a pain in the cold weather, it’s extremely important to try to do so, because physical activity generates body heat. Simply engage in light indoor exercises to avoid overexertion in extremely cold conditions. A jog around your home or neighborhood (if there is no ice around), doing yoga, stretches, or pilates, etc. is a great way to stay active in this weather. Be sure to open all curtains and blinds when working out, or simply throughout the day, to allow sunlight to enter and naturally warm your home. Consider taking warm baths and hot showers to stay warm after working out or engaging in any physical activity.
