The most famous part of Halloween is wandering around the neighborhood in a costume, trick-or-treating. But whether you are too old and it is not socially acceptable or because you are just not a fan of late night walks surrounded by children, there are several alternatives that are just as fun as trick-or-treating. Here are just three.
Costume Fashion Show
Half the fun of Halloween is finding or creating a cool costume and showing it off, and what better way to do that then by having a costume fashion show. This could be a competition or just a fun way to hang out with your friends.
Some suggestions to spice things up might be giving all of the participants a certain theme they should dress up as, the stranger the better. Some ideas might be:
- Emotions
- TV shows or movies
- Periodic Elements
- Game shows
- Inanimate objects
- Food
- Candies
You can also change up the awards instead of just having the “Best Costume Award”. Some might include “Best Looking” or “Most Creative”. If you don’t want to have a competition, then you could give an award to everyone for a very specific reason like “Most Sparkly” or “Least Expensive”. These awards are a great way to have a good laugh with everyone.
Scary Game Night
Halloween is notorious for being the “scary” holiday, and what better way to celebrate that by playing some scary group games. These games are best played with a larger group of friends; the more, the marrier, and are a great way to bond and laugh together, and better yet, they can be tailored for your friend group, so you don’t have to do something too scary like a haunted house. Instead, you can make these games as fun or as hair-raising as you want. One suggestion on upping the adrenaline is by playing spooky music over a speaker to set the tone. However, there are plenty of other Halloween games that are not as eerie, and are fun to play with the entire family.
Candy Judging
Collecting heaps of candy is a staple of Halloween, but one of my personal favorite traditions was trading candy after trick-or-treating so that I could get my favorites while getting rid of all of the ones I didn’t like. Some candies are clearly superior, and one of the best ways to determine which ones reign supreme is by hosting a candy judging.
This could be as silly as you want, including having all of the judges dress up with fake mustaches and a monocle. Then have everyone try a specific candy and judge it against several categories.
Another variation of this could be creating your own treat (either physically or just conceptually) and have a Shark Tank style judging. It can be judged in a variety of ways including by creativity, design, and persuasiveness.
No matter what your plans are for Halloween night, there is always something enjoyable to do, but making memories with the people closest to you will always be the best part of any night.
