The History of Twitter and its Controversies

The History of Twitter and its Controversies

Twitter is a social networking service run by an American company (Twitter Inc.) where people can broadcast short messages for the world to see. Twitter has been through plenty of changes recently, and many individuals do not approve of the company’s decisions. In this article, I will be discussing Twitter’s history, specifically how it grew and how it got to its current point. Additionally, I will be talking about the current Twitter controversies.

The Beginnings of Twitter

Twitter first debuted in 2006 with the first tweet by Jack Dorsey, being “just setting up my twttr.” The initial concept of Twitter originated from a company called Odeo. Dorsey, an engineer at the company, brought up the idea of Twitter when the company asked him about the side projects he had. Dorsey proposed the plan of creating a short message service where one can send small blog-style updates to peers and co-workers. Many thought the idea was interesting, so development for the application began. Noah Glass, one of Twitter’s founders, gave the application its name. Seeing the potential, Dorsey and Williams bought out Odeo and began their own company to further develop the service. After the application was presented at a large conference and an infusion of venture capital, Twitter Inc. was officially created.

The Growth of Twitter

Once Twitter Inc. was created, the social media platform grew exponentially. The first person on Twitter to accrue over a million followers was popular actor, Ashton Kutcher. Twitter was also used as a way to measure the popularity of presidential candidates. In the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama, the candidate who won the election, had significantly more MySpace and Twitter followers than his opponent, John McCain.

The main strength of Twitter, however, is its ability to communicate news information across political borders quickly and efficiently. Due to this facet, Twitter became an important tool for journalists. An example of Twitter being used in this way was when it informed the public about the events surrounding the Iranian presidential election in June 2009. A lot of foreign journalists were banned from covering this event, so Twitter ended up being the main hub for information for this massive political event.

Twitter Today / The Controversies

In 2022, Twitter was bought by Elon Musk for $44 billion. In a short period of time, Musk has made massive changes to the social media platform and the company. Musk has fired Twitter executives, laid off a large portion of people on Twitter’s payroll, fired veteran engineers, and slashed the contractors working with the company with no notice before removal. Many were shocked at the changes Musk made, but he has stated that he believes it is necessary if the company wants to be profitable.

Looking at changes Musk has made to the platform itself, one major change is that he has unbanned various accounts like Donald Trump’s or Marjorie Taylor Greene’s. Many have been critical of Musk’s decision to do this because they believe people like Trump could “spin up controversy with a single late night tweet.” Nicole Gill, the executive director of tech watchdog group Accountable Tech, is against Musk’s decision to re-platform Marjorie Taylor Greene. According to Gill, Greene has been “promoting transphobic and bigoted rhetoric.” Both Trump and Greene’s accounts were banned initially by Twitter due to the spread of misinformation (in Trump’s case, the election; in Greene’s case, the COVID vaccine). Elon Musk wants Twitter to be a platform where people can speak freely without fear of getting banned.

Twitter is a very large social media platform that has made a large impact on our world. Starting as a small idea thought up by Jack Dorsey, Twitter is now a large corporation, recently bought by one of the richest people on the planet. The new changes being instituted have caused a lot of controversies recently. Let’s wait and see what lies ahead for the future of this company.
