Self-care during every season of the year is extremely important, and the summertime is no different. Summer self-care is important for many reasons. You may think that finally since the cold weather and cloudy skies have disappeared, the sun will cure you of all mental or physical issues. However, without putting any effort into personal self-care, you won’t get anywhere!
Higher temperatures in the summer coupled with more outdoor activities will lead to dehydration, sunburns, and other illnesses you can get from simply being exposed to too much heat! Without incorporating self-care activities into your daily routine after spending time outside, you won’t be too happy or healthy come fall and winter.
In terms of mental health, the summer seems to be the most relaxing season of all four, but every summer season comes with its own set of stressors. Some of these include trying to find free time during busy work schedules, disrupted routines due to lack of school, or adventurous travel plans. Practicing self-care to promote relaxation and reduce stress allows you to take a break from everyday life and responsibilities and focus on yourself.
The summer months are also the best time to get in touch with nature. Spend abundant amounts of time outdoors, whether that be in a swimming pool, on the beach, on a nature trail, or in a park. Spending time outdoors has numerous benefits for your well-being. It has been shown that being outdoors will reduce stress, boost your overall mood, improve levels of concentration and focus, and increase feelings of overall happiness.
Below are a few easy ways to incorporate very basic forms of self-care into your daily summer routines!
HYDRATION IS KEY
As redundant and silly as this sounds, drinking water is one of the best forms of self-care there could be this summer! With higher temperatures and more increased time outdoors, it’s important to keep your body cool by hydrating. This doesn’t just stop at drinking water, however. Eat tons of fresh fruits like watermelon or other berries to keep your body cool at all times. You can even create different types of recipes and try out new beverages. Mix water or iced teas, add flavorings of your choice, and throw in fresh fruits of juice!
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Protecting your skin is another form of very easy and simple self-care to engage in. Apply a layer of sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out into the sun. Every. Single. Day. (Even do this in the wintertime)! Use sunglasses and big hats to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. Reapply your sunscreen regularly. Try your best to wear covering clothing that’s made of loose fabric and cooling materials, like cotton or linen.
PRACTICE MINDFULNESS
As mentioned earlier, practicing mindfulness in nature and spending time connecting with nature is a great way to relax and rejuvenate your mind. Take a walk in the park, go hiking, pack a picnic, or go for a run on the beach. Engage your five senses by observing the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. Try to practice meditation or basic mindfulness and deep breathing to fully immerse yourself in the present moment and experience a calming sense of relaxation. Spend time outside self-reflecting and on your personal growth. Take some time to reflect on your goals and aspirations. You can even bring a journal outside and jot down any mindful thoughts that come to mind during this time.
REST
Take days off! The summertime might seem like one big vacation, but even regular people get stressed and busy during the summertime. It’s important to allow yourself to take breaks and rest often. Schedule downtime for relaxation and activities that require little stress or thought. Set aside time to relax by the pool, read a book, listen to a podcast, meditate, spend quality time with your family and friends, or simply lay around on a picnic blanket outside to enjoy the sun and greenery around you. There’s no better way to be productive and happy than incorporating loads of relaxation time, as well.
