For most Americans, drinking coffee in the morning is part of a daily routine. That first cup of joe in the morning makes the whole day manageable, and without it, that day is not going to be too productive. I will be the first to admit that since being in college, I have developed a slightly concerning dependency on coffee. Have an 8 am class? Drink coffee. Cramming for a test? Drink Coffee. Didn’t sleep well? That’s ok, drink coffee. While I may use coffee as the solution to any college problem, I am among millions of Americans who drink it. In fact, 50% of the U.S. population drinks coffee. With so many consumers, there are a lot of coffee shops all over the United States. Here in Athens, Georgia, there is one on almost every corner. If you live here, go to college here, or are just visiting, I have tried all the coffee shops in Athens, Georgia and these are my three favorites.
Jittery Joe’s

This coffee shop is an Athens favorite. With thirteen locations, nine of which are in Athens, Jittery Joe’s has quite the loyal fanbase. My favorite location is on the UGA campus in the Miller Learning Center. During a long day of classes, it is nice to come to this location and order a coffee while working on homework. They offer a large variety of coffee drinks but my personal favorite is the spiced chai latte. It tastes like Christmas in a cup.
For a college assignment a while back, I did a project on Jittery Joe’s. They have a tasting room located off Barber Street where they roast a majority of their coffee that is distributed out. I visited it and the employees showed me the process to make coffee. It was a cool experience to see these small coffee beans, which are green before they are roasted, turn into a fresh cup of hot coffee. I highly recommend checking it out.
Walker’s Coffee Shop and Pub

The first time I went to Walkers, I was quite possibly on the most awkward first date of my life. While that may not have gone too well, their coffee made up for it. Walker’s serves coffee with a twist. Not only do they serve good ole’ black coffee, caramel lattes, macchiatos, and all of the other basic coffee menu items, they also serve alcoholic coffee drinks. For those of age, you can add a little special ingredient to your morning cup.
Located downtown, this is a great place to relax, have a cup or two, and meet new people. The atmosphere is very down-to-earth and makes it easy to strike up a casual conversation with someone sitting nearby. At night, Walker’s turns into a pub where people can go to have drinks. Their hours of operation are from 9 am to 9 pm.
Zombie Coffee and Donuts

When I first started going to school here in Athens, this was the first coffee shop I ever went to. It is located downtown and is only a few blocks away from campus. I have an obsession with their caramel ice coffees. They are creamy and flavorful without overpowering the coffee taste. Not only do they sell coffee, but they also sell donuts that are close to the size of my head. They allow customers to pick from donuts they have out or they can build their donut and specialize it to whatever they are in the mood for. They even sell a fruity pebbles donut!
The atmosphere is very lively and it is not uncommon to see a lot of Athens locals enjoying a cup with friends here. Zombie Coffee is located on East Broad Street and is open from 7 am to 8 pm. This is a great place to stop by while shopping downtown or when walking to class.
To all my coffee connoisseurs out there, these are the best coffee shops in Athens, Georgia. One sip of their coffee and anyone would agree that coffee can’t get much better than this. So get out of bed and come try them out.
