The University of Georgia is known for its vibrant football culture and the Georgia Bulldogs fanbase has only grown since their championship victory against Alabama last year. People come to Athens from all over the country to watch the Dawgs play. According to the Georgia Dogs website, Samford Stadium is the fifth largest on-campus stadium in the country with 92,746 seats available. Fans should expect to pay an average of $150 and as much as $430 per ticket. Students fair better with season passes available for about $60 but the university cannot guarantee tickets for all home games.
Still, even if you are not able to get into Dooley Field, there are plenty of opportunities for game-day fun. Here are three things to do on game day if you don’t have a ticket.
1) Go Downtown
Downtown Athens boasts many quality restaurants, street vendors, bars and shops, all within a few blocks of each other. Whether you’re in the mood for Southern, Thai or Italian cuisine, there are numerous delicious options. The Place, Last Resort Grill, and South Kitchen and Bar are among the most well-reviewed downtown spots on Yelp. Many of these places also cater to fans by putting the game on TV so you can watch while you dine.
The historic architecture is not only pleasing to the eye but it is in surprisingly good shape considering that some of the buildings are over a hundred years old.
The Athens streets are filled with colorful personalities, especially on weekends. It is common to see buskers out on game days, sharing their live music with the world for free.
2) Tailgate
Many fans choose to tailgate before entering the stadium for the game but there is no rule against keeping up with the score from the comfort of your tent.
There are many good places to start tailgating both on and off campus. Popular spots include Myers Quad, North Campus, the Carlton Street Deck, Mileage Avenue, The Classic Center, and the Downtown parking decks. There are even ways to purchase your own space at Tailgate Station and Bulldog park.
One advantage of tailgating is the food and drink. Barbecue is the classic option with many tailgaters bringing charcoal grills to cook fresh, hot meals.
Tailgating is a great way to meet new people with a shared interest and enjoy good food with friends and or family. Just make sure to leave the campus better than you found it. On-campus residents and clean-up staff will appreciate it.
3) Watch At Home
There is no shame in spending your Saturday at home or at a friend’s house. Attending a game day house party or hosting your own is a relaxing and fun-filled way to support your team.
Homemade treats and decor can get pretty elaborate. Websites like Pinterest provide an endless supply of inspiration.
And of course, Totinos are mandatory.
The Georgia Bulldogs’ domination on the field has earned them an adoring fanbase and home game tickets are in high-demand. However, watching from the bleachers is not the only way to show support for your team. Mixing and matching these suggestions can make for an exciting gameday experience.
