When going for a walk in the forest with your family, one great way to keep your kids occupied is to have them join in on games. Catch

Catch is a game that involves passing a ball between two or more people. To play the game, each person the ball is passed to has to catch it. The aim of the game is to keep the ball in the air without it hitting the ground. Kids love playing catch! Be sure to pass the ball in an open area of the forest to ensure the safety of each player. Catch can be a great way to help your kids stay active while enjoying their time in nature.

Follow the Leader

The game, follow the leader, allows one player to be the leader and the other players to follow their instructions. It is advised to make an adult the leader and have kids follow behind the adult. In this game, you can add in movements such as arm swinging, clapping, hopping, or skipping as you make your way through the woods. The game can be made a little more difficult by adding in new movements your kids have to follow as time goes on while you play. If they miss a movement then they lose the game.

Interval Exercises

Change up your walk by incorporating different elements of movement as you progress on. Some exercises that you can include are running, skipping, hopping, and spinning. Here, you can get creative as you would like. You can also get your children involved and allow them to make up new movements for everyone to try.

Scavenger Hunting

Another option is to set up a scavenger hunt game for your kids where they have to take photos of animals, birds, and specific objects they can see. Not only is this fun, but it’s also a fantastic way to get them involved in appreciating nature, wildlife, and many other aspects of the great outdoors! Allow them to show their competitive side by adding in a prize for the winner. That’s certainly one way to get them to stick to playing the game!

Movement Groups

If you’re out with other families or friends and they’re kids, you can split yourselves into teams or movement groups. This can be perfect for allowing your kids to get to know other kids as you can mix and match families together. Perhaps you’d even like to add in a prize again and set an endpoint for the groups to reach. The first group to make it there wins! Just be sure an adult is present in each group.

Map and Compass Reading

Kids love to have a little autonomy. By bringing maps of the area and compasses, you can allow them to take over the group and lead the way to your destination. Of course, you’ll want to give them some help if they start to get confused where the right path is so that you don’t get lost. But, while moving along, your kids will love feeling in charge of the group and directing everyone. This is also a way that you can show that you trust your kids and help instil confidence in them.

Leaf Craft Games

Leaf crafts work especially well during autumn when the forest is filled with fallen leaves. There are plenty of options here. You can have your kids make many different crafts like mandalas, bracelets, paintings, necklaces, and so much more. All you need to do is give them the supplies and allow them to get creative.

Tree Climbing and Rope Swinging

You might want to exercise some caution when tree climbing and rope swinging. If your kids are the energetic type with a touch of fearlessness, these can be great activities for them. Just try and find a tree that’s not too tall, climb up it and tie a rope swing from branches. Your kids can climb around the tree and swing in the air. Always keep an eye on them when they are playing, but these activities can be fun for children and easy to set up.
