During their childhood most people remember dressing up as a princess, superhero, fairy, astronaut, doctor, or any number of things and then leading fun, make believe adventures around the house or backyard. Playing dress up is so prominent during childhood that it has become the imagery of a joyful child. However, playing dress up isn’t just a fun activity; it actually has a plethora of benefits for your child.
Dress-up can happen in a variety of ways whether that be putting on a store-bought costume, handmade accessories, or even something that only makes sense in your child’s head. However, dress-up is more than just physically wearing a costume; it is creating an entire character. If you ask a child who they are when they are playing dress-up, rarely will they answer by giving you their actual name. Instead, they will give you their character’s name or occupation. They might say, “I’m Cinderella” or “I’m a doctor.”
Engages the Imagination
Because your child is creating a whole new identity and world for them to play in, it is stretching their imagination. Imagination, while on the surface, seems to be only important during childhood, can be beneficial in adult life too. It has been linked to great leaders and entrepreneurs because it develops creative thinking which leads to improved problem solving skills. It also allows you to think outside the box, decreasing the limits people subconsciously place on themselves.
Practices Social Skills and Teaches Empathy
When children become a different character, they are practicing empathy because they are seeing the world from a different point of view. Oftentimes this is through them pretending to be a helper like a parent taking care of a baby, a doctor healing an injured patient, or a secret agent taking down a bad guy. By pretending to be these caretakers, your child is better understanding their role in society and their own lives.
On top of that, most times children will dress-up and play together, so they are learning how to work with others in a vast array of situations that they won’t get a chance to explore otherwise. This will lead them to better grasp social skills because they are testing out and experiencing behaviors in a safe environment.
Encourages Language Development and Communication Skills
Because children are creating a character, oftentimes that character talks differently or will have a more “sophisticated” manner of speech (at least according to your child). This means that when they are dressing-up as that character, they are using their words and language as a whole in a different way, allowing them to use words that they might not say during the rest of the day. Dress-up gives them the opportunity to break any ruts they might have created in order to try something new.
Explores Themselves
Children naturally mirror what is around them, which is how they learn about the world, so dressing up creates a safe place for your child to navigate new ideas or behaviors that they have encountered. Allowing them a safe place to explore others’ actions and feelings is a great way for them to understand what they like and don’t like, which leads them to better understand themselves and the world around them.
Improves Fine Motor Skills
Many parents wrestle with their child not wanting to put on their own shoes or jacket, and oftentimes it can be a struggle for children to learn how to do it because they lack the fine motor skills necessary to accomplish tasks like zipping up a zipper, fastening velcro, or buttoning a button. One of the benefits of dress-up is that it offers a more enjoyable way for your child to practice those fine motor skills. They are much more incentivised to button the buttons on a Batman costume than on a sweater that their parent picked out for them.
There are many ways to encourage your child to dress-up more and create a safe place for them to do so, and one way is to join them in their adventures. This can be a sweet bonding time between you, that will foster your relationship in all aspects of life. Your child looks up to you, so by engaging with them in this silly way, you are letting them be themselves.

It’s important for your child to find the balance between playing and learning. Sometimes it’s even best to combine playing and learning to teach children to enjoy learning.
