Rainy days are an inevitable aspect of anyone’s summer. Unfortunately, rainy days can lead to you being stuck indoors all day with a bunch of children who just want to run around and scream. This can drive even the most patient person up a wall. Thankfully, there are ways to make rainy days enjoyable for everyone involved instead of making you want to pull your hair out. There are so many activities to keep even the rowdiest bunch of children engaged for the entire day. Here are several ideas to turn rainy days into a beautiful memory for you and the kids.
Boggle Their Mind with Magic Tricks
Learning some magic tricks that you could whip out on a moment’s notice will serve you well all throughout your life, whether it be impressing a date or keeping a group of kids entertained. Kids are filled with so much wonder that it is easy to keep them engaged for long amounts of time with a few simple card tricks. These card tricks, or others you can find online, take very little time to learn, and even a complete newbie can learn and perform them within a few minutes. Kids will love to watch you do the same tricks over and over again, so this is an ideal way for you to engage them, rain or shine.
Have a Movie Marathon
Sometimes the best way to spend a rainy day is curling up on the couch and watching a movie. Putting on family favorites or classics can keep kids happy and quiet for long periods of time while allowing you to take a mental break and breathe for a moment. Just make sure to choose a movie whose songs won’t annoy you when you hear the kids scream along at the top of their lungs.
A way to add to the movie experience is by cooking popcorn or making some snacks together beforehand to munch on while you watch. This will elevate the movie experience and can make the time seem more special rather than something you do every weekend.
Take Them on a Treasure Hunt
Treasure hunts are fantastic ways to spend a rainy afternoon because it doesn’t take much to convince the kids that there is a treasure and they have to find it. You could also tailor this to the group of kids that you have: for their age group, interests, or even how much time you have to prepare.
Usually, a treasure hunt can take a little while to plan out because you need to decide and acquire the “treasure” which could be candy, a gift, or even supplies to go on another adventure, like marshmallows for making s’mores. Then you should plan and print out the clues. The clues should all take them to another location where an additional clue is until they finally put all of the clues together to figure out where the prize is located, but the clues can be tailored to fit how much effort you want to put into planning this.
Even if you only have a few minutes to prepare, you can still pull off a fantastic treasure hunt. You could have stations, and once your kids complete each station, they can get a clue as to where the final treasure is located.
Challenge Them with an Obstacle Course
Building an obstacle course out of chairs, blankets, pillows, or anything else you find around the house can be the perfect way to use up some of that excess energy that your kids might have if they are stuck inside. To keep them engaged for longer, you can always time them and challenge them to beat their time, or you could make it a competition if you have enough people.
No matter the circumstances, there are countless ways you can have fun (and keep your sanity) on rainy days. What matters is keeping a positive attitude and a calm head, because then the sky’s the limit with what you can do with the children.
