Summer is such a fun time filled with outdoor adventures, traveling, swimming, hanging out with friends, and so much sun. It is an amazing time of the year when people love to spend time outdoors and engage in so many different physical activities. 

However, even during all of this fun and adventures, it is important to keep your health in mind. We have all been there when we are so busy laughing and playing with our friends that we forget to drink water or put on sunscreen, and suffer from it for the next several days. The summer, while it also brings so many unique experiences and opportunities, also brings several health challenges that we need to remember. Here are 5 ways to continue to stay healthy during these hot months.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is crucial during the summer season, especially if you are outside all of the time. Our bodies are made up of around 70% of water, but most of that is lost due to sweat. Our bodies use sweat as a way to cool us down, so when we are outside in the heat and humidity, our bodies lose more water than we would typically. This can cause us to become dehydrated quickly, which leads to various health issues such as fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. 

Therefore, to make sure you stay healthy, drink water frequently. You should be drinking at least 8 cups a day and even more when you are outside for long periods. One tip to help with that is always carry a water bottle with you when going out so that you can keep track of how much you are drinking.

Protect yourself from the sun

We all have memories of our parents slathering us in sunscreen until we are whiter than a sheet of paper, but even though that might be a might extra, they had a valid concern. When outside, especially during the summer, the sun’s rays are extra strong, meaning that people are more likely to become sunburnt or worse when they are outside for any amount of time. This is dangerous because the sun’s UV rays can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. It is vital to protect yourself by applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going out in the sun for any length of time. 

A common misconception is that you have to be outside for long periods of time to be at risk for burning. However, it greatly depends on your skin type. Many people don’t have to be outside long to be at risk of burning, so always make sure to wear sunscreen. Another way to protect yourself is by wearing protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts when possible. This way you can enjoy the sunshine as much as you want without fear of turning into a lobster. 

Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is essential to staying healthy during any season, but especially during the summer season. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet, which contain essential nutrients and antioxidants that help protect your body from various health issues. It is actually easier to do this during the summer because there is an abundance of fruits and other seasonal foods that are available during the summer for relatively low-prices, so it is a great time to explore some foods that you might not get to try typically. 

Stay Active

While you might be tempted to lounge around during your time off, binge watching your favorite show and eating ice cream, remaining active is a crucial part of staying healthy during this season, and summer offers so many great ways to stay active by engaging in physical activities that you enjoy, such as swimming, hiking, or cycling. Physical activity not only helps you stay fit but also reduces stress and improves your mental health.

Summer can be a stressful time for some people, especially those who suffer from anxiety or depression.
