It’s hard to go overnight from living the lifestyle you’re living right now to a completely brand-new and healthy one. You have to start slow and build simple and attainable habits that you will remember to do every day to maintain this new healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle not only helps you physically to look and feel better about yourself but will also help you significantly feel better mentally and emotionally. It’s important to remember, though, that change for a healthy lifestyle isn’t done through just actions, but the most important part is a mindset change. Changing the way you view your life and the habits you hope to build will help you gain some motivation and confidence to move forward and build the healthy lifestyle you dream about right now.
REGULAR EXERCISE
As traditional as this suggestion is, regular exercise is one of the best and most important ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular physical activity seems like such a hassle, but it’s actually quite simple! When regular exercise comes to mind, you might be thinking of lifting 30-pound weights or running 3 miles every night. But regular exercise is so much more than that! It can be so many different things. Anything that keeps your body moving and your sweat glands working overtime. Simply going on a brisk evening stroll or doing 20 sit-ups and jumping jacks in your backyard or even following a 10-minute dance workout video in your living room are great ways to get regular exercise! Regular exercise reduces the risk of chronic diseases, builds immune functions, and will even help you mentally. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, but remember that any movement or regular activity is a great start to building your healthy lifestyle.
BALANCE DIET
Another very cliche thought, but a balanced and healthy diet will work wonders! Does this mean to immediately cut out all sugary and salty treats and only munch on carrots and lettuce all day? No! It means you’re allowed to treat yourself every day because the rest of your meals are healthy and nutritious. Remind yourself throughout the day to eat as many fruits and vegetables as much as you remember to do so, and don’t stop yourself from enjoying whatever treats you want to enjoy – just do so in moderation! Try to avoid too many highly processed foods and overly sugary drinks, and if you drink, try to curb your alcohol consumption!
SUFFICIENT SLEEP
Another no-brainer, get enough sleep! Getting enough sleep is one of the most important ways to regulate a healthy lifestyle. Sleep is one of the body’s most needed and important functions. It helps to maintain the immune system, cognitive function, and overall well-being. It’s important to try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Block out any blue light from your phone, laptop, or TV, and invest in an eye mask or earplugs. Listen to white noise, play your favorite soft music, and do your best to fall asleep in a restful way to give yourself the full eight hours to sleep and awake the next day in the most peaceful way!
MANAGE YOUR STRESS
Stress is a natural part of life. It is simply unavoidable, but there are many things you can do to manage your stress and keep your overall stress levels lower, therefore contributing to a healthier lifestyle down the line. As mentioned above, proper sleep and continuous exercise are key factors for a less stressful everyday life. In addition to these important factors, you can also try a hand at meditation or yoga to calm your nerves and find a good way to destress when times get rough. It’s always normal to have certain coping mechanisms or habits to fall back on, but try to avoid the most unhealthy of these, such as excessive smoking, drinking, eating, etc. Lastly, don’t be shy or afraid to talk to your family and friends. A lot of the time, you’ll feel a weight lifted off of your shoulders by simply just talking through your issues!
HYDRATION IS KEY
Staying hydrated is another key habit to building a healthy lifestyle. When our bodies are hydrated, we experience a range of negative side effects, such as migraines, fatigue, and difficulty focusing on your day-to-day tasks. For the most part, the average human being should be drinking around 8 cups of water a day, but this can vary based on age, build, and even the climate you live in. Some people also find it easier to drink water by mixing flavored powders or fruit into it. It might also be beneficial to incorporate water-based foods into your diet, as well. Foods such as cucumber, watermelon, celery, and some berries will provide hydration and multiple minerals and vitamins to better your diet. Remain mindful of your water intake, and maybe even consider taking around a water bottle with time stamps on it to remind yourself to drink water at each hour of the day!
