Vacation Bible School (VBS) has long been a cherished tradition in Christian communities across the world. Typically held during the summer months, VBS is a week-long program where children gather to learn about God, study the Bible, sing songs, create crafts, and build friendships in a safe, welcoming, and faith-filled environment. While it may look like fun and games from the outside, VBS plays a powerful role in spiritual formation and community building. For Christians, it serves as both a ministry outreach and a foundational tool for teaching children the love and truth of Jesus Christ.
Introducing Children to the Gospel
At its core, VBS is about introducing children to the Gospel message in a way that is engaging, age-appropriate, and memorable. Many children who attend VBS may not come from Christian homes or attend church regularly. For them, VBS may be their first meaningful encounter with the story of Jesus and the message of salvation.
Through Bible stories, dramatizations, and creative teaching methods, children learn key biblical truths. God loves them, Jesus died for their sins, and they can have a personal relationship with Him. This foundational knowledge is essential to developing a lasting faith. VBS makes this introduction fun and accessible, laying the groundwork for deeper spiritual growth.
Discipleship and Spiritual Growth
For children who already attend church, Vacation Bible School serves as a time of spiritual deepening. Unlike traditional Sunday School, VBS allows for extended time each day to focus on Scripture and its application. With daily themes, memory verses, and interactive activities, VBS helps children understand the Bible not just as a book, but as the living Word of God relevant to their everyday lives.
Through prayer times, worship music, and group discussions, children are encouraged to ask questions, reflect on what they’ve learned, and build a personal relationship with God. Many children make a first-time decision to follow Christ or renew their commitment to Him during VBS.
Creating a Sense of Christian Community
Vacation Bible School brings children, families, and volunteers together in a unique, joyful community. It fosters friendships among peers and connects families to the local church in a non-threatening way. For many churches, VBS is an outreach tool that draws in families who may not be involved in church life. It provides a bridge between the community and the congregation.
Additionally, VBS is a place where children see faith lived out through their leaders—teenagers, parents, and older church members who volunteer their time and energy to teach and mentor. These role models leave a lasting impression and often inspire children to stay connected to their faith as they grow older.
Training the Next Generation of Leaders
Vacation Bible School is not only for young children. It’s also a powerful training ground for youth and adult volunteers. Teenagers often help lead games, crafts, music, or small group discussions, gaining hands-on experience in children’s ministry and leadership. For many, it’s their first opportunity to serve in a meaningful way within the church.
Adults, too, grow spiritually through their involvement. Teaching Bible lessons, leading worship, or organizing behind-the-scenes logistics deepens their own understanding of Scripture and helps build stronger bonds within the church body.
Check out What New Covenant is Doing for VBS and Missions
As we discussed, VBS is much more than a week of fun activities. It is a vibrant expression of the church’s mission to “go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). It introduces children to Jesus, nurtures growing faith, builds lasting friendships, and strengthens the church community.
For Christians, VBS is a reminder that faith formation begins early and that sowing seeds of the Gospel in young hearts can bear fruit for a lifetime. Whether as a participant, parent, or volunteer, involvement in VBS is a meaningful way to grow in faith, serve others, and fulfill the call to share God’s love with the next generation.
At New Covenant, we understand the importance of VBS in one’s walk, which is why we are excited about our Jamaica mission trip, which will be from July 12-19. The focus of this trip will be hosting VBS for children in the community as well as working in the warehouse, distributing food and supplies to homes, and serving at a local orphanage.
