Building a free text message (sms) marketing platform DOES NOT require the thousands of dollars a month that some service providers charge.

In fact, what if I showed you how to build a 100% free text message marketing system?

Well, that’s exactly what I’m going to do today in this article.  It’s not going to be a technical paper where you’ll be instantly lost – that would sort of defeat my purposes for writing it.  Instead, what I want to do is show you how to build your very own text message marketing system that won’t cost you dime to run, manage, and maintain.

Ready to get started?  Great…  here we go.

The Amazon World of Twitter

You’ve heard of Twitter, I’m sure.  But what you (and most everyone) doesn’t realize is that Twitter can be used a text (sms) broadcasting tool – and best of all, it doesn’t cost you any money to implement and use.

So this free text message marketing system is, at it’s core, built upon the Twitter platform.  But don’t be scared – you don’t need to know any coding to make this happen.  All you need is an exclusive (dedicated) Twitter profile to run your text messaging campaigns and that’s it.

Let me give you the theory, or concept, of how this works first – it might help you understand everything a little better.

So what happens is, you create a Twitter profile that’s exclusive – or dedicated – to be used only for your text message marketing campaigns.  You’ll then promote the handle  (or name) of your Twitter profile by telling people to text “follow yourtwittername” (without quotes) to 40404.  And once somebody sends “follow yourtwittername” to 40404, bam… they are instantly added to your text message list.

Now, you as the owner of “yourtwittername” Twitter profile, all you have to do is login (via your computer, mobile phone, Twitter iPhone app, whatever…) and send out your message.  Once you do, everyone who’s signed up on your Twitter list will receive a text message instantly.

Quick example “how to”

So let me give you a quick example of a make believe restaurant that’s going to build their own (free) text message marketing system.  This way you’ll be able to see a live example of how all the pieces come together.

Let’s say I’m the owner of Bob’s Bar-B-Q in Athens, Georgia and I want to create my own text message marketing system so I can tell my customers when I’m running lunch specials.

First thing I do is go to and create a new account with the Twitter name as “bobsbbq” (if that’s available – you might need to try different variations until you find one that’s available).

So assume it’s available, I just created my new Twitter profile @bobsbbq – the url would be “” (without quotes).

Now that I have my Twitter handle (bobsbbq), I can now start promoting and building my text message marketing list.  What I want to do now is start promoting my free text message list by putting a sign at the entrance of my restaurant that says:

Get on Bob’s BBQ text message list to receive exclusive deals, lunch and dinner deals, and more…  Just sent a text message to 40404 that says “follow bobsbbq” (without quotes), and that’s it – you’re signed up!

So that promotion runs for a week or so and let’s say 300 of my customers have signed up.  I’m not ready to start promoting my deals.

So I login to Twitter, and tweet out the following:

Lunch special today only, get free 32 oz drink with any lunch item

As soon as I hit send, all 300 of my current customers will receive a text message instantly, being notified instantly of my lunch special.

If I was smart, I would have sent the message at around 10am or so, just when my customers are starting to think about lunch.

The Amazing Statistic With Text Messages

The most amazing part of this whole thing is the statistic associated with text messages.

Did you know that 97% of text messages are opened within 3 minutes of being received?  That’s an astounding number – something that even the best email marketing campaigns have never been able to achieve… not even close!

So when I send out my text message promoting my lunch special, I can be pretty darn confident that 97% of my customers that are on my text message list have read the message and know about my special.

Now the only thing I need to worry about is making sure my restaurant and staff are ready for the crowd!
