I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for…that’s right, ice cream! Based on a song that debuted in 1927, those lyrics “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” still ring true even if you never knew such a song existed before reading this.

There is just something – actually, a lot of things about ice cream that gets kids of all ages happy to indulge in that cool tasty treat that can be enjoyed year-round. Believe it or not, eating ice cream churns out happiness. As you eat ice cream, your body produces a hormone known as serotonin, which is also known as a feel-good hormone. That’s why you’ve never seen a child being angry or sad while eating ice cream. It’s just not possible!

Ice cream is also full of vitamins and minerals including vitamin D, vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus and riboflavin, which can make parents feel even better about having ice cream in the freezer or surprising the kiddos with a trip to the ice cream shop. This tidbit may even have you skipping along with your children with a cone in hand.

Even if your child is lactose intolerant, there are equally delicious non-dairy options that won’t have them feeling like they are missing out.

But before the ice cream melts, we are giving you the scoop on 4 all-time favorite ice cream flavors for kids, in no particular order.

1. Birthday Cake

March 29 2024

Birthday cake? Good! Birthday cake ice cream? Genius! This ice cream flavor has a rich, buttery vanilla flavor that is packed with generous chunks of freshly baked cake and rainbow  sprinkles. Essentially, you have the best of both worlds – a creamy homemade ice cream and cake all in one cup or cone.

When and where this idea originated, you’ll be hard pressed to find online, but it is popular. That is for sure! Most if not all ice cream brands carry this flavor in grocery stores and the same can be said about your local ice cream parlors. Happy birthday to me and you!

2. Cookies ‘N Cream

March 29 2024

Creamy vanilla ice cream with chocolate cookies such as Oreos mixed in is the stuff dreams are made of. Need we say more? Well, we will because here’s a cool fact about this popular flavor among kids and kids at heart.

The story goes that South Dakota State University (SDSU), which has produced commercial ice cream since 1910, is the birthplace of Cookies & Cream or so it claims. In 1979, Cookies ‘N Cream began with a dairy plant manager and two students who wanted to come up with a different ice cream. Oreo cookies were bought and crushed into vanilla ice cream with the idea of it being called Oreo ice cream. However, with potential copyright infringement, the name was changed to Cookies ‘N Cream. The unfortunate thing is that SDSU never patented or licensed the product, which spurred the great debate over where it actually originated from. Moo!

3. Chocolate Chip

March 29 2024

Chocolate chip ice cream is a timeless classic. Typically made with a creamy vanilla base and mini chocolate chips or even chocolate chunks, this ice cream flavor may sound simple but it makes a perfect dessert topping served in a bowl, cup or cone. It’s the combination of the added texture and chocolate flavor from the chocolate chips that kids love. For chocolate lovers, there is also chocolate chip ice cream with a creamy chocolate base. Chocolate chip chip hooray!

4. Cookie Dough

March 29 2024

Cookie dough ice cream first came to the ice cream scene at Massachusetts-based Fabulous Phil’s Gourmet Ice Cream in 1984 along with the Ben and Jerry’s Burlington Scoop Shop from an anonymous suggestion on their flavor suggestion board. Many kids have been grateful for this creation ever since.

Cookie dough is a blend of cookie ingredients including chocolate chips which have been mixed in the form of little squares. Although eating raw cookie dough can be harmful due to the use of eggs and can cause Salmonella, ice cream brands make sure to have a ratio that would not be harmful enough to remove this ice cream flavor from the freezer or ice cream shops.

Here are two honorable mentions that are worth, well, mentioning:

Bubble Gum Ice Cream

Baskin-Robbins first created pink bubble gum ice cream in 1970 as a tribute to bubble gum chewers everywhere. It features vanilla-based ice cream that is turned pink with bubble gum-flavor along with candy-coated real pieces of bubble gum. Even if your child does not like to chew bubblegum, they may actually enjoy the ice cream version of it.

Not all ice cream shops offer it and you may not find it at local grocery stores, but if they do, you can bet it will go fast.

Blue Moon

The flavor, which has a Smurf-like color, is not only tasty but it also leaves a bright blue stain on your tongue. And what kid doesn’t think that’s cool? Blue moon ice cream is eye-catching and also has a mystery flavor. No one can agree on what it actually tastes like because some think it tastes citrusy with hints of vanilla, while others say it is flavored with almond extract. Others may say it tastes like a bowl of Froot Loops or Fruity Pebbles, cotton candy or bubble gum.

Of course, there is an ice cream flavor for every palette, whether it made the list or not. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
