Hundreds of women have stood on the front lines of social justice movements, tirelessly fighting for equality, human rights, and systematic change. Many have fought for suffrage or civil rights and their voices have sparked change and movements to pave the way for progress. Dorothy Height is a not as well-known civil rights leader and organizer who was known for her work in advancing the rights of Black women. As president of the National Council of Negro Women, she fought racial segregation, poverty, discrimination, and was constantly advocating for economic and social justice for marginalized communities. Gloria Steinem is another feminist organizer and writer, and she is best known for her leadership in the women’s liberation movement during the 1960s and 1970s. She co-founded Ms. magazine, is a prolific writer and speaker, and is a tireless advocate for women’s rights, reproductive freedom, and gender equality.

From science to art to politics and activism, there are many remarkable women who broke societal standards to pave the way for the women ahead of them. One of these women is the well-known Marie Curie. She made groundbreaking contributions to the fields of chemistry and physics, and is known as a pioneer in science. She was the only person to ever win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific disciplines. Her discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the atom and laid the foundation for future research in nuclear physics and medicine. Next is Amelia Earhart, who captured the hearts of many around the world as she became the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. During her career, she was constantly shattering all sorts of aviation records and inspired a multitude of women to pursue careers in aviation and aerospace.

LEADERS IN POLITICS

Since the beginning of time, men have exclusively held leadership and government positions, but slowly that began to change as influential women became heads of states and government ministers to leave a mark on political history. Indira Gandhi, a prime minister in India, served for 15 years, making her the longest serving prime minister. She was a key figure in the Indian National Congress party and implemented many reforms in areas such as education and social welfare. Jacinda Arden, a well-known prime minister, is one of the youngest female leaders as head of New Zealand. She is best known for her empathetic leadership style and progressive policies, and has gained international acclaim for her positive methods of handling crises such as COVID-19 and the mosque shootings that occurred.

CHAMPIONS OF EDUCATION

Education is an important tool for empowerment and for social change, and women throughout history have been consistently advocating for girls and women to receive a proper education. Maria Montessori was one such innovator. An Italian physician and educator, she is best known for developing the Montessori method of education that emphasizes child-centered learning and hands-on activities. Her new approach had a profound impact on early childhood education worldwide. Another such pioneer was Esther Afua Ocloo, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and advocate for women’s economic empowerment and education. She founded the Women’s World Banking in Ghana. She worked tirelessly to provide access to financial services and business training to female entrepreneurs in developing countries.
