Law Firm Website SSL Security Alert: Starting October, Google To Show NOT SECURE Warnings

Law Firm Websites Should Upgrade to SSL Security Now!

Starting October 2017, Google just announced they will start forcing SSL (website secured browsing) on all websites that have forms.

Here’s the notification that Google released about an hour ago:

Chrome (version 62) will show a “NOT SECURE” warning when users enter text in a form on an HTTP page, and for all HTTP pages in Incognito mode.

The following URLs on your site include text input fields (such as < input type=”text” > or < input type=”email” >) that will trigger the new Chrome warning. Review these examples to see where these warnings will appear, so that you can take action to help protect users’ data. This list is not exhaustive.
In October, Google is making secure websites a necessity. Attorneys who fail to upgrade to an HTTPS site will likely notice a loss of business.

This coming October, Google will be releasing the Chrome version 62 web browser, and with it a new security warning to visitors that the site you are on is not secured.  This is a huge update from Google considering 60% of the desktop browser market is dominated by Chrome.

For your law firm prospects and clients, this means that 6 out of 10 visitors to your law firm website who are using desktops or laptops will see the “NOT SECURED” message in Chrome.

In nearly all cases, Chrome updates the browser automatically in the background, without the user even knowing the update is happening.  This means non SSL secured law firm websites will be immediately susceptible to visitors seeing a NON-SECURED warning once the update completes in the browser.

How will this SSL security policy affect my law firm website?

If your law firm website currently does not have SSL security certificate enabled, your clients / prospects visiting your site will be warned that your site is not secured.  Specifically, according to Google, a warning message will be presented in the browser as soon as someone starts typing in a form on your website.

This “NON SECURED” warning will have a substantial negative impact on the trust of your website visitors and may cause visitors to start exiting your website.  If mass exiting occurs, your website will also see a substantial negative impact on your bounce rate which is a strong user experience metric impact your SEO (ranking and presence in Google search).

How to see if your law firm website is SSL secured?

Open your website in any standard web browser like Google Chrome.

Look up in the address bar.  If you see only “http://www.yourlawfirmwebsite.com” (note:  the http:// portion), then your law firm website IS NOT secured.

If you see “https://www.yourlawfirmwebsite.com” (note: the https:// portion), then your law firm website is secured.

You can also see in the screenshot above, our law firm client’s website is secured (has the “https://” version), and also you can see the green padlock and the word “Secure” in the Chrome browser view.

What can your law firm do right now to fix SSL security issue?

Depending on where your website is hosted, making your website SSL secured can be as simple as enabling an SSL security certificate.  If your law firm website is hosted on a platform with more legacy (older version) technology, then the SSL certificate could be a bit more cumbersome to enable.
