Being Afraid of the Dentist is Common

If you are afraid of visiting the dentist then don’t feel like you are alone.  Studies show that over 50% of those who visit the dentist are in fact afraid of making the visit, even if they’ve been to the dentist on a regular basis.  Being afraid of going to the dentist is normal.

It can sometimes be a scary thought to visit the dentist and get your teeth poked and prodded, and perhaps even drilled.  But there are some things you can do that will make the prospect of visiting a dentist a whole lot easier to handle.

In fact, the steps below will help you not only overcome your fear of the dentist, but they will help you be comfortable and confident each and every time you visit your favorite dentist.

#1:  Visit a dentist who understands

#2:  Sedation Dentistry

Another way to deal with the fear of visit the dentist, if the gentleness and kindness of the staff doesn’t work, is to utilize sedation during the procedures.  Some people, no matter how much you emphasize being gentle, kind, and friendly, are not going to look forward to visiting the dentist.  And sometimes the fear of visiting the dentist supersedes even the dentist themselves.  These people could be petrified of the equipment, or simply the thought of having equipment in their mouth drilling their teeth or cleaning their teeth.  For these folks, offering some sedation might help ease the fear of visiting the dentist.  Sedation can be given to the patient to help them relax while in the dentist chair, and if needed, can even put them completely asleep – depending the severity of the fear.  But just knowing that sedation is an option can help some people overcome their fear of visiting the dentist.

#3:  Bringing a Family Member or Friend

Finally, a great way to overcome your fear of visiting the dentist is to simply bring a family member of a close friend with you during your visit.  Having someone who is a close friend or family member right there with you during your visit can dramatically decrease your fear factor while having to visit the dentist.  And perhaps, if you asked the dentist before hand, you may even be allowed to bring that family member of friend into the procedure with you to hold your hand while you are sitting in the dental chair.
